Romeo and Juliet @ Duke of York Theatre is it really worth it?

I finally got around to seeing the very popular anticipated Romeo and Juliet theatre show yesterday. Directed by Sunsets Bolourvard Olivier Awards winner Jamie Lloyd. Starring Tom Holland as Romeo and Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet. 

In Jamie's usual style, the play is stripped back with no costumes, props or set designs and focuses solely on the actors and their performance.

I would like to first say that all the actors did an amazing job. It was good to see Tom take on this role and make his debut back into the theatre scene from his previous role in Billy Elliot. Francesca was brilliant she gave Juliet's a playful vibe.

I have to also say the Freema Ageyman as the Nurse was great giving a monochrome play the playful colourful jokes we very much needed.

Prior to going I checked reviews and people’s thoughts on the production and was very intrigued to see the direction of Romeo and Juliet in a modern light with its supposedly more dark themes. 

My last thoughts on this production are the following: I thought it was an interesting take on the usual take of the tragedy love story. But could have been better in some ways. I understand the use of screens to enhance the overall story.

But the part when using the the backstage and seeing coat hangers and using the rooftop with a modern day London skyline and sirens in the back was not for me. I'm all for using my imagination but.. I wasn't sold!
